charlie is well regarded and respected in the industry
Previously worked as a gym manager for two years.
Charlie enjoys weight training on a regular basis and keeping fit and healthy. Back to topAs a Veteran amateur Australian Bodybuilder I see many of today's athletes do plenty of isolation exercises in their triceps but I believe much of tricep development still comes from pressing exercises such as dips and bench press. Triceps are a relatively small muscle and are much more easily over trained than larger muscle group such as lats.
So the question is How many tricep exercises should you be doing in your workout?
At the very beginning level you will make great gains of only 3-5 total sets of tricep work, with a steady increase in training over a few months I suggest you increase that to 5-7 sets. And as a advanced bodybuilder you would do no more that 8-10 sets during the off season and no more than 10 sets when preparing for a comp.
My Tricep Training Tips
I like to stick to basic training movements like narrow grip bench press, parallel dips and reverse grip bench presses during the off season and then switch to almost all isolation movements like one arm cable or dumbbell tricep kickbacks, kneeling high pulley cable tricep extension. So why not give it a go and watch your triceps grow!

As the summer days are starting to warm up we put on our Board Shorts and often people check out our Lower Leg Development!
Calves are often neglected body part and I Believe it often separates the men from the boys, many of the top bodybuilders have awesome calf development So I thought I would put together some calf training tips:
o If you lack width concentrate your efforts on a seated calf raise which will add with to your soleus.
o Try shocking the calf's with a 3 day cycle First Day to 6-8 very heavy sets after a good warm up of 10-12 reps, Second day 4 sets of 15 reps and then rest day after and repeating forth day.
o Be sure to stretch if you want big calves. - I personally made great gains and add more solid muscle to my calf's-the best way I found to stretch calf's is to face a wall while standing 3 feet away from the wall-lean forward and place your hands about shoulder with and straighten your legs and torso so your body makes one long line from the floor to the wall-place your heels on the floor with your legs held straight. When you can barely touch the floor with your heels, you should hold this position for 15 seconds and repeat at least 5 times.
o Don't over train your calves-they are just like any other muscle they need rest.
o Try non-resistant routine by super setting one-legged calf raises on a step you can add 25 reps and all non-stop. Angle your toes outward on every step slowly adding your sets each week of a total of 6 sets.

It is with great sadness that MAX'S offer our condolences to the Mitchell family and his fiancé Sarah with the recent passing of Sam.
As many of you may know, Sam Mitchell had worked for MAX'S for about 7 years, and was our Queensland State Sales Manager. He tragically passed away on the 28th of October 2011.
Sam's funeral was held at his old school in Brisbane, Brisbane Grammar, on 12th of November and was attended by many people, he was obviously well loved and had touched many lives.
Sammy was one of our featured athletes on MAX'S Muscle TV Series 4. He had a great physique and loved bodybuilding. He recently won the WFF Queensland Title and was runner-up at the Australian Championships in Darwin. We had filmed Sam for the upcoming Series 5 of Muscle TV, and with the permission of his family and fiancé Sarah, we will be screening this as a tribute to Sam's life in early 2012 on Muscle TV.
We will all miss Sammy sorely. He was a good friend, great work colleague, and part of the MAX'S family. His friendly laid back manner and cheeky smile will remain in our memories forever.
Rest in Peace Sam.

Back to topBack in April this year I had the pleasure to make contact with Adam Hill who i thought was just a regular guy like most of us with an ambition to be heard.
What caught my attention was that Adam's life is little different though as he has become part of a great group of people actively supporting their good friend James Gribble who suffered very severe, life changing consequences from what was a seemingly innocuous occurrence in Africa back in 2008.
What I discovered was that Adam has known James for just on 20 years, having boarded with him back in their school days. They have remained close; in fact James was the best man at Adam's wedding and is godfather to his son, Max.
The fact James was so gifted with sports makes the consequences of his accident that much more the incredible story reads as follows;
On a trip to Africa in 2008, which James had embarked on after working in Europe for many years, James' life took a tragic turn.
The trip was seen as a great way to de stress from the corporate world and certainly adventure and traveling was nothing new to James.
One morning after heading out for a run, James decided to have a go at fishing for the elusive tiger fish, a popular past time for tourists in Zambia as well as a common source of food for locals. While fishing James started feeling faint, being quite dehydrated and only remembers sitting down, the next thing he can recall is awaking (as he passed out) and instantly noticed he had no feeling from his neck down.
Given the remoteness of the location it was over 30 hours until proper help arrived, in the way of two helicopters and a jet. James was transferred to Johannesburg hospital in South Africa as adequate facilities were not available in Zambia.
During the time, James talks of a feeling of complete shock which was shared by those around him. He knew he had suffered some kind of spinal injury, which was later confirmed as breaking his c4 and c5 vertebrae as well as severe bruising to his spinal cord.
On being notified of the accident, his father, Roger immediately flew in from Australia to be with him. From that point on they worked together in an intense rehabilitation program that they completed for 6 hours per day until returning to Australia 5 weeks later.
Once in Australia, James again wasted no time in rehabilitation and to this day he still completes many hours each day in an aim to improve his condition.
Given the situation, James has a truly remarkable attitude to the whole scenario. He went from being completely independent with absolute freedom to as close to a complete reversal as possible where he finds it difficult to complete the most basic of tasks without assistance. These are the cards he has been dealt, there is no time for bitterness and retrospection, rather it is all about looking forward and actively trying to repair his body in any way possible whether it is massage, hydro or occupational therapy.
James compares the situation to being like a baby, where even the simplest task - basic movements through muscular contractions have to be learned again.
In an effort to raise awareness of his situation and that suffered by other victims of spinal trauma James has started the "Puffin Magic" foundation. Inspired by his attitude and motivation to keep going, his good friend Adam Hill has his own dedication for James. Being surrounded by people who were doing their bit for James, Adam wondered what he could do.
Since he always had a passion for lifting weights, the decision was then made to compete in a bodybuilding event - the event he chose was the NSW INBA Titles ,Adam did amazingly well for his first ever bodybuilding competition.
Adam Transformed his Body in just a few short months
Adam goes onto say about the struggles with dieting from the onset, feeling absolutely sick as he detoxified his body when the dieting started, however things once settled down when his body found a balance and the pictures certainly speak for themselves.
Adam would like to thank Max's for providing proteins during his competition preparation,he would also like to thank his trainer Ebanie as well as his family and friends for their support. To James he dedicates the whole thing, in the hope that it can create awareness for the Puffin Foundation and spinal injury.
Adam is the first to admit he now has a new found respect for bodybuilders and has very much caught the bug. He very much appreciated everyone he has met in the industry and appreciates the camaraderie, which permeates through the sport.
The news on James' rehabilitation has been nothing short of amazing. After being diagnosed as a full quadriplegic, James is now in a situation where he can get out of a chair himself and walk with crutches. His progress here will continue and his biggest frustration still lies with dexterity in his fingers, which is a tough battle to overcome.
Well done Adam your story is incredible and we all congratulate you at MAX'S.
Please note all donations can be made through the Puffin Magic website and are fully tax deductible.click here to donate
Back to topWell, there are only 3 things that scare me the most -
Dam Speeding fines
Keeping the Toilet seat up
Unwanted FAT around my midsection
OK so the first 2 things are not that hard to change-Just gotta learn to break old habits-Right!
So let's address the most common cause for people out there, and it's the simplest one to start with -- they are overweight, period. They eat too much junk, in way too big of portions, and don't exercise enough.
In 20 years in the game as a trainer, I can tell you this with absolute certainty -- there is no one, universal "right" way for everyone, everywhere. There are no simple answers and cookie-cutting approach only works in the cookie making business.
Because trust me, in the real world beyond research and theory, I've seen various "plans" yield outstanding results just look at our Muscle Up challengers click here .
So if you are planning for a 6 pack this summer and some intense training to get the job done, well that changes the ball game entirely. Exercise, specifically strength training, changes your internal physiology for up to 48-72 hours after the session (assuming you are lifting more intensely than Mr Puniverse.
I believe in strength training to boost the basic metabolic rate.
Now, onto more specifics -- foods or lifestyle choices that lead to fat accumulation specifically around the midsection:
Two of the most abundant compounds in the average, modern Australian diet are two of the worst compounds for body composition enhancement AND overall health -- concentrated fructose and trans-fats.
In practical terms, "you gotta cut the crap". Try to reduce Trans fats (coming mostly from packaged/refined snack foods, margarine, fried foods, etc.). Also cut out concentrated sources of fructose: sugar fruit juice and dried fruits, and B.S. foods that are marketed as "health" foods and better than sugar but contain just as much, if not more fructose, than table sugar (ie nectar, honey, etc.). Fructose should be consumed in much smaller amounts than in the average Australian diet, and in the way in which Mother Nature intended -- via seasonal whole fruit.
If you stick to this first principle alone, that should take care of about 90% of the problem. Almost everything else related to belly fat accumulation can be related to the hormone cortisol. And while a necessary and integral part of normal functioning, problems (including that damn belly fat) can arise with chronic overproduction.
Stress. Modern living and corporate/business/financial pressure have us all way more wound up than we should be. You just have to try as much as you can to find ways to reduce stress a little bit -- intense strength training is a physical stress, but also can be an emotional release, and has a calming effect on the body upon completion;
Stress response to foods.
There are many of us that have allergies, or at least are sensitive, to specific food compounds. Some specific ones that come to mind are gluten (the protein in wheat, rye, barley) and lactose (the sugar in milk). If you have a full-blown allergy, you'll know it -- digestive distress. But many of us have a sensitivity that goes undiagnosed, and can lead to lethargy, water retention, and of course cortisol elevation and fat accumulation. If you suspect this, try cutting out things like gluten and lactose for a few weeks and see how your body responds.
Besides storing excess calories, one of the physiological purposes for excess body fat is to serve as a storage site for toxins. Take in a lot of toxins through the environment or through foods, and you have an additional reason to store belly fat. How can you reduce toxin exposure? You can buy organic produce (regular produce is often sprayed with pesticides that act as toxins in our body). You can cut back on alcohol, which the body treats as a toxin. You can reduce your consumption of packaged foods -- I can't help but think that all of those chemicals, preservatives, and artificial sweeteners are somewhat perceived as toxins in the body. And finally, eat more detoxifying foods (and not some B.S. detox plan designed to sell you 100 different supplements). I just mean real foods that naturally serve as detoxifiers -- ie organic green and leafy vegetables.
Yes coming from Italian Family I do love my espresso, but the research is quite clear that caffeine can elevate cortisol levels. but if you are eating like crap, not getting quality energy from real food, and just using caffeine and fake energy to compensate (ie drinking a pot of coffee a day, plus 5 red bulls, and 10 diet drink's), we'll you can see where that might lead to problems.
Now I know some of you are thinking, I am crazy. I'm not cutting out all of that. I have to live my life. I get it. But my philosophy has always been to present the absolute ideal scenario, just so I don't underestimate anyone's ability or desire to "take things 100% all the way". In reality, its up to you to find your own compromises. What has worked well for most of our Muscle Up challengers is to get them to follow the 85% rule. Follow the ideal path 85% of the time, and 15% of the time do whatever you want. If you do that, you will do just fine. Imagine what cutting out all sugar 85% of the time could do for your body and health?
Insulin is a misunderstood hormone these days in the low-carb Era. No hormone your body produces naturally is inherently bad, it just needs to be controlled.
Taking a Protein like MAXS SUPERSHRED is a great and convenient way to ensure you get the protein you need as well as keep your belly fat at bay.
Not only does Supershred help you lose your belly fat it also 7 unique Nutrient complexes combined into one cutting edge formula

If this article resonates with you, my best advice is (I know it sounds crazy, but reread above) -- add some non-fructose, non-gluten containing carbs back into your diet (ie sweet potatoes, rice) to REDUCE belly fat. At the very least, start with a small amount in the post-workout window (0-45 min post training). Keep your protein:carb ratio around 1:1 (if you have 30g of protein go with 30g starchy carbs).

For those of you that do not know Luke Wood had been a great ambassador to the bodybuilding community and regular on MAXS MUSCLE TV and had been battling kidney problems off and on over the past year or so.
To My understanding he finally got a call for a transplant. Things were going well until some signs of the body starting to reject the kidney.
Things got under control again and a wedding was set to marry his fiancee Nora.
Today, his body started to reject the kidney again. Was rushed to hospital but doctors could not save him.
He gave life everything and just wanted people to be proud of him!
This is very sad. I've have always looked up to him for years and all the team at MAXS will miss him sadly Rest In Peace Luke

Back to topHi Guys,
Fred here well it's Monday again,no time to waste this week :-)
I am off to workout tonight- bombing back can't wait . How was your weekend and what are your plans for a great week to continue to give your best?
"It is easier to be wise for others than for ourselves."
~Francois De La Rochefoucauld
Objective advice
I was thinking over the weekend If I was someone else, what advice would I give myself?
If you could step back from being you, and look objectively at what you're doing and how you're living, what changes would you recommend?
It's easy to imagine the straight forward advice you'd give to someone else, because you don't have to follow that advice. Now imagine applying that same level of honesty and objectivity to your own situation.
Remember that you are not your problems, as intimate as those difficulties may feel. You do indeed have the ability to step back and to see clearly what you must do.
You have it within you to rise above every difficulty. You are absolutely capable of knowing and doing what will bring true fulfillment.
So take an honest, loving look at where you are. See the very real and positive possibilities available to you.
Rise above the limitations you've been imposing on yourself. Live your true values and fulfill the best that you know is within you.
In strength always

Hi
Ready for the coming months spring not too far away !
Just a little motivational bump .....you can do this!!
Raise your expectations
It can be tempting to lower your expectations when things are not going your way,you might be feeling flat or down or just wanting to quit. Yet the most realistic response is not to lower your expectations, but in fact to raise them higher.
It may seem that lowering your expectations so they're more in line with your reality would protect you from disappointment. Yet lowering your expectations is sure to bring on even more disappointment.
If you're disappointed with the transformation results you're getting so far , it's not because your expectations are too high. It's because those expectations are not high enough to pull you forward.
Raise your expectations to the point where they become so meaningful and compelling that you cannot help but fulfill them. Choose those expectations that will drive you in each moment to do what must be done to reach them.
When the going gets rough, the answer is not to give up on your dreams of transforming yourself .
The answer is to grab on to those dreams, and to put them front and center of your life.
From my own Body Building and competition experience I like to Set my expectations high, connect solidly and consistently with them, and those expectations will give a positive, effective direction to your life.
Expect the very best, and let those expectations drive you to live out your dreams.

Freddie "Eat your Green's' my Italian Mum-Maria used to always say to me
She was right Veggies in my and Mums opinion are the most perfect food be it for those who want to lose fat or add quality muscle.
Here's why:
1. They are very low in calories. You'd have to eat 5 bags of spinach, or 3 heads of broccoli, to equal the calories of just 1 cup of pasta or 1 tiny tablespoon of butter. So, you absolutely do not have to go hungry on tiny portions when you load up on veggies.
2. Here's the next point about veggies. They are high in fiber. This is both good for your digestion and good for weight loss as that fiber expands in the stomach, making you feel full and satisfied. Broccoli, green peas, and other green leafy vegetables are also good sources of fiber.
3. The third reason fibrous carbs are perfect for fat loss is because they have almost NO adverse affects on blood sugar levels. While it's still a good idea to balance veggies out with a protein source, even eaten alone they're okay because they don't cause an increase in insulin.
Veggies also play an important role in muscle gain so be sure to do as my mum says eat your greens and you will add muscle to your physique and a great way to combine this with your favourite protein drink.
so if you are competing or staying in shape going green is the way to go and i like to combine my favourite protein drink as well as it gives me such a complete meal.
Protein and a great quality Protein like MAX'S is required due to the huge demands that are placed on the body.
Protein powder is also relatively more cheaper and a whole lot more versatile than lean protein sources and adds a great variety to your nutrition program.

Whilst at the gym this cold morning I was approached by a young enthusiastic and very energetic 20 year old and what I really liked about him was that he got curious about training and nutrition so I asked do you HAVE A PLAN!
From my own personal experience If you don't have a plan, random circumstances will make one for you. And believe me you probably won't like it much so I steered him in the right direction.
Decide what you would like(be very specific) and go for it. Success is no more complicated than that just look at our MAX Challengers as living proof click here
The energy and time you spend can either bring you toward your dreams or it can keep you in the service of someone else's dream. Choose to follow your own dreams.
What are your own most deeply held values and purposes. Decide precisely how you would like your world and your life to be and look like and create the body of your dreams.
Trust me when I say that the most dismal failures are not caused by the inability to reach a goal. Those failures are the result of not having a clear enough and meaningful enough goal.
Know exactly where you intend to go, and you're much more likely to get there. Have a plan, follow it with persistence, and enjoy being where you sincerely choose to be.

Back to topMy name is Frank and I am from Adelaide, SA. I just thought I would briefly give you some feedback on your MAX'S product and what it has helped me to achieve.
In the last 8 months, I have been going through a lifestyle change. Wind back when I was 152 Kgs - I even had to pay for to airfare seat to Los Vegas and i thought this is bullshit!
So After doing extensive research both online and offline I came up with Maxs - I wanted to gain muscle while losing fat, which is very hard to do but i was desperate.
For months, I have been using MAX's SuperWhey. It is absolutely fantastic.
I now use a variety of MAX's products - and only MAX'S:
With Breakfast: MAX'S SUperWhey
Snacks: MGP/Muscle Meal Cookie/Cut Carbs Bar
After training: MAX'S Super Shred
Before bed: MAX'S Nitetime
Yes I may have done the research, done the hard sacrifices and work, but if it wasn't for MAX'S, I wouldn't have reached the point to where I am now - down to 75 Kgs, -I am literally half the person I used to be!
It's hard to believe I have done this in just under 9 Months, I hope you enjoy the photos.
With MAX'S, my weight loss and tone goal is coming true, slowly but surely. Thanks to MAX's, and all there advise i truly believe Impossible is Nothing.
After Interviewing Frank what stuck in my mind was that he was willing to make choices, his life moved in a direction that is agreeable to him.
Choices make control and responsibility possible, along with achievement and fulfillment so CONGRATULATIONS to you Frank.
By making choices, you communicate and reinforce your preferences and desires, and the world around you responds accordingly.
When there is a choice to be made, there is an opportunity to more precisely and positively direct your life. Choose consistently, with abiding purpose, and your life moves forward toward your highest vision.
"If you are serious about your goals, drop the conditions. Go directly to your goal. Be your goal! Conditions often disguise strategies for escaping accountability. Why not just take charge and create the experience you are looking for?"

Back to topHow does Beta Alanine Work?
When Beta Alanine enters your muscle cells it combines with another amino acid L-Histidine to form a compound called Carnosine. One of the key roles of Carnosine in your muscles is to "buffer" or neutralise Hydrogen Ions, which is good news to anyone who trains hard. You see, when your muscle contract hard they produce H+ ions which cause the muscle environment to turn acidic (lactic acid burn). This causes that burning fatigue you experience during hard exertion. Carnosine reduces or neutralises the H+ ions which means you can train at higher levels for longer. Increased levels of muscle Carnosine have been shown to increase both strength and endurance performance. Supplement with about 6 grams of Beta Alanine per day has been shown to increase muscle Carnosine by up to 60% after just 3 weeks (Amino acids 2007, 32(2):225-233).
The Science
In 2006 a study published in Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab looked at the effect of Beta Alanine on 33 college football players over 10 weeks. They had groups put in placebo, Creatine, or Creatine plus Beta-Alanine. The results of the study showed that the Beta-Alanine plus Creatine group gained significantly more muscle and lost more fat than the Creatine only or placebo group. The message from this study is if you are choosing Creatine supplement, look for one that includes Beta Alanine as well. Creatine alone did increase muscle to a lesser degree but did not reduce body fat. Athletes taking a placebo experienced minor muscle gains and no fat loss.
In a 2009 study (Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2009 Apr;41(4):898-903) researchers from Belgium looked at the effect of eight weeks of beta-alanine supplementation on sprint performance in 17 moderately to well trained cyclists at the end of a simulated endurance cycling race. A double-blind study was performed, where a group of athletes were tested, they then followed a prescribed training regime for 8 weeks, after which they were retested. During this 8 weeks the athletes were given either a Beta-Alanine supplement (2.4g/day) or an inert placebo. In the pre and post-supplement testing, the subjects performed a 10-minute time trial and a 30-second isokinetic sprint (at 100 rpm) after a 110-minute simulated cycling race. As well as power outputs, blood lactate was also measured.
The results showed that compared with the placebo group, peak power in the Beta-Alanine group was increased by 11.4% in the Beta-Alanine supplemented group and mean (average) power in this group was also increased by 5.0%. The researchers concluded that oral Beta-Alanine supplementation can significantly enhance sprint performance at the end of an exhaustive endurance exercise bout, and this study provides yet more evidence that Beta-Alanine can deliver real performance advantages.
Higher levels of Beta-Alanine supplementation were researched in a study (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 2009, 6:5 doi:10.1186/1550-2783-6-5) using High Intensity Interval Training over a 6 week period. The study involved 46 men who trained on bicycle ergometers employing a high intensity training protocol over 6 weeks. The Beta Alanine supplemented group not only showed big improvements in exercise performance (32%) but also demonstrated significant gains in lean body mass. The placebo group showed no increase in muscle gain however they did improve performance by 18%, about half the level of the Beta-Alanine group. Researchers postulate the buffering effect of Carnosine (the main metabolite of Beta-Alanine) reduces the acid build up in muscles during hard training. It is thought that this acid environment inhibits muscle repair and growth, so increased Carnosine levels actually stimulate more protein synthesis in trained muscles.
Another theory suggests that Beta Alanine supplementation allows for greater training volume thus providing a greater stimulus, resulting in significant gains in lean body mass, as observed in this study. In support, Hoffman et al. (Nutrition Research 2007, 28(1):31-35) reported significantly higher training volume for athletes consuming Beta-Alanine during resistance training sessions, which they hypothesized lead to significant increases in lean body mass. In short, minimizing the acidic response from HITT, and/or increasing training volume with Beta-Alanine supplementation, helps to increase lean muscle mass and leads to improvements in performance.
So the science says that Beta-Alanine improves both anaerobic output in sports such as weight training and sprinting, as well as improving endurance performance. It has also been shown to increase lean muscle mass significantly. The science also shows that Beta-Alanine compliments the effects of Creatine. In other words, using Creatine and Beta Alanine together gives a significantly better result than using just one or the other.
MAX'S Cre8 Carnage
MAX'S Creatine Formula Cre8 Carnage is based on the findings of these studies. It combines 8 new generation Creatine hybrids for rapid and sustained absorption, with Beta-Alanine and Histidine to maximise Carnosine production in your muscles. 10 grams of Cre8 Carnage twice per day will provide about 5 grams of Beta Alanine, 1.6grams of L-Histidine and 12 grams of Creatine to optimise Carnosine production in your muscles to prolong your workout intensity and maximise muscle gains.
What you can expect
o Creatine combined with Beta Alanine allows you to complete more sets and reps which means you get stronger. These studies show that athletes were able to complete more reps with the same weights.
o Muscle hypertrophy (muscle cell growth) increases at a faster rate than Creatine alone and is far superior to results of not using supplements.
o Dramatic increases in one-repetition maximum in all exercises over non supplemented athletes means you will increase strength and power faster.
Recommended Dose
The optimal dose seems to be about 5 - 6 grams of Beta Alanine per day combined with about 10 grams of Creatine per day. This can be achieved by taking 2 - 3 serves of MAX'S Cre8 Carnage each day.

MAX'S CR8 Carnage! Without it I wouldn't have the energy and strength to lift what I do, and get through 6 sessions a week of training. I thought I would skip taking it one week and see the difference and it was huge. Awesome product and no other compares. |

I've been trying for almost a year to get ripped, and nothing was working! I tried diets, pills, shakes, everything! But I just couldn't stick to anything. But one day Mum brought home a box of max's hydroxy phase cut carb protein bars and I started eating them everyday, not only do I love the effects that it's having on my abs, but I really like the taste as well and I actually enjoy taking supplements now. |

I've had problems with protein digestibility in the past so was looking for a blend that overcame this issue. Fortunately Maxs Muscle Growth GTE has helped me overcome this. This would be because the E in the GTE stands for Digestive Enzymes, making the protein more bioavailable and the results I've achieved since taking it speak volumes. |
